STQA is an NSF funded Industry/University Cooperative Research Site (I/UCRC). It is also one of the major university sites of a nation-wide research center on security and software engineering (S2ERC).

Welcome to the STQA Home Page

Software has become fundamental to our society and our everyday lives. Regardless of age, gender, occupation, or nationality, each one of us depends on software, either directly or indirectly. Yet the disappointing truth is that software is far from defect-free and large sums of money are spent each year to fix and maintain defective software. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, software bugs cost the U.S. economy an estimated $59.5 billion annually, or about 0.6 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). The same study also found that more than one-third of these costs, or an estimated $22.2 billion, could be eliminated by an improved testing infrastructure. Furthermore, these estimates do not take into account any potential deaths or catastrophic financial loss associated with the failure of mission critical software.

It is notable that software testing continues to be the primary approach used in practice to ensure the development of high quality software. In fact, the majority of our students graduating with a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in computer science or software engineering are engaged in developing and testing software. It is also estimated that more than 60% of the cost of software development is spent on testing and debugging. This situation has become even more challenging because not only is software larger and much complicated than ever before, but the industry also suffers from a tighter schedule and reduced cost.

In response to this scenario, faculty members in the Computer Science Department at UTD established an Advanced Research Center for Software Testing and Quality Assurance in August 2014. Our primary objective is to promote further research and develop advanced cutting-edge technologies, with user-friendly tool support, for technology transfer. We will focus on closing the gap between the state-of-art research conducted in an academic setting and the state-of-practice techniques used in the field. We will assist practitioners, no matter what their previous level of experience with software testing and quality assurance (including security, safety, reliability, modeling, data analysis, etc.), to be quickly brought up to speed on the necessary background knowledge and gain the ability to apply a cost-effective set of procedures tailored to their specific projects. With this, it is more likely that software can be better tested to ensure high quality at reduced cost.

Our plan is to make this center a leading research facility on software testing and quality assurance in the north Texas area. In addition, our center also provides a path to access all the results generated from projects funded by S2ERC – an NSF-sponsored Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on Security and Software Engineering.
