Welcome to the 2014 Meeting, PIs!

The 2014 CISE REU PI meeting will be held on Thursday (March 27) and Friday (March 28) at the Westin Arlington Gateway, Virginia, which is two blocks from NSF. For more information, please click on the Hotel page.

The meeting begins with breakfast on Thursday, followed by either the annual New PI session or "unstructured" free time for returning PIs. General sessions begin at 10:30am with welcoming remarks and introductions, and continue to Friday afternoon, followed by an optional dinner at a restaurant nearby the hotel.

Meeting registration should be submitted by February 15, 2014 and the deadline for hotel reservation at the group discount rate is March 5, 2014.

  • This is the registration website for the 2014 NSF CISE REU PI meeting only. If you are not associated with any NSF CISE funded REU site (as PI, co-PI, or mentors) or NSF representatives, this registration is not for you.
  • The registration consists of two parts. The first part is to provide your personal data and REU site information, while the second part is to choose your preference for how you would like to participate in the breakout sessions and other events at the conference.
  • Although the meeting will cover the hotel expenses on March 26 (Wednesday), 27 (Thursday), and 28 (Friday) for the PI (or a designated representative) of each site, all participants still need to complete their Hotel Reservation Forms before the cut-off date.
  • Every New PI also needs to complete a Travel Form.

The official meeting venue & hotel is the Westin Arlington Gateway. Each REU Site can send one participant (we call this person the "designated representative") with hotel expenses covered by the meeting on Wednesday (March 26), Thursday (March 27), and Friday (March 28). All other participants are responsible for their own hotel expenses at the negotiated rate of $224 (plus taxes and in-room internet), subject to availability.

All participants staying at the hotel must use the above customized Westin Hotel registration website to reserve a room. This will identify you as a meeting attendee. The hotel requires a credit card number to secure the room and to cover incidental expenses, but the room charges will not be billed to your credit card if you are the designated representative of your REU site. Note that this only applies to the $224/night rooms. Those with higher rates are not included.

Washington, D.C.


Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, "the District", or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. As permitted by the U.S. Constitution, the District is under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.

The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the pre-existing settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia in 1846 and created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District in 1871.


Washington, D.C., had an estimated population of 632,323 in 2012, the 24th most populous place in the United States. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington Metropolitan Area, of which the District is a part, has a population of 5.7 million, the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the country.

The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are in the District, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.

Cherry Blossom Festival


The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a spring celebration in Washington, D.C., commemorating the March 27, 1912, gift of Japanese cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City to the city of Washington. Mayor Ozaki donated the trees in an effort to enhance the growing friendship between the United States and Japan and also celebrate the continued close relationship between the two nations.

The first "Cherry Blossom Festival" was held in 1935 under joint sponsorship by numerous civic groups, becoming an annual event. The cherry trees had by this point become an established part of the nation's capitol. In 1938, plans to cut down trees to clear ground for the Jefferson Memorial prompted a group of women to chain themselves together at the site in protest. A compromise was reached where more trees would be planted along the south side of the Basin to frame the Memorial. A Cherry Blossom Pageant was begun in 1940.


In 1994, the Festival was expanded to two weeks to accommodate the many activities that happen during the trees' blooming. Two years later, the Potomac and Arakawa became sister rivers. Cuttings were taken from the documented 1912 trees in 1997 to be used in replacement plantings and thus preserve the genetic heritage of the grove. In 1999, fifty trees of the Usuzumi variety from Motosu, Gifu, were planted in West Potomac Park. According to legend, these trees were first planted by Emperor Keitai in the 6th century and were designated a National Treasure of Japan in 1922. From 2002 to 2006, 400 trees propagated from the surviving 1912 trees were planted to ensure the genetic heritage of the original donation is maintained.

One breakout session based on research topics is planned. There will be 7 groups each with a facilitator whose responsibility is to keep the conversation on topic, seek a volunteer scribe, and ensure the selection of someone to report back on the discussion.

Registration Fee
The PI meeting pays the registration fee for only one participant from each REU site. Other people attending the meeting (including NSF Program Directors or the second attendee of an REU site) must pay a fee of $350. We will contact you regarding this payment shortly after you complete your registration. This fee covers meals and other incidental expenses. In addition, these participants will be responsible for paying for their own hotel accommodations.

If you are arriving at Union Station and choose to take a taxi from the station to the hotel, the taxi stand is outside in front of the building. There is usually a line of passengers, but that line moves quickly and it should only take a few minutes to get a taxi. While standing in line you might be approached by someone asking if you want a ride. Be aware that these maybe gypsy cab drivers who may or may not be operating legally. Even if they are operating legally, they often charge different fees than the taxis at the stand. Be sure to ask all pertinent questions before accepting their offer to transport you to your destination.
