With the advent of new computing paradigms, communication and control technologies, software systems are required to be more and more autonomic, collaborative, self-adaptive and evolutionary. The sustainability of software product and the quality of delivered services imposes greater impact to the various perspectives of people’s economic activities, scientific research and social life, in particular, when software services and systems are operating in an open and volatile environment, such as the Internet. In order to make software work as expected in a dynamic environment with constantly changing user requirements, the software must be aware of the changes, and be adaptive according to the external input and the feedback of the application system. The scope of software cybernetics is rapidly evolving to encompass hybrid cyber-physical systems with hierarchical distributed processes, data-driven decision-making, and observer-in-the-loop at various scales.

This workshop, the 14th International Workshop on Software Cybernetics, will be held in conjunction with the 2017 International Conference on Software Quality, Reliability, and Security, and will focus on the theme of “Software Cybernetics in large scale software systems”. It provides an international forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange their original research results, identify future research problems, and report the current best practices in industry.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Modelling of cyber-physical systems
  • Modeling of evolving and dynamic systems
  • Modeling of context-aware, self-adaptive software
  • Adaptation of control theory to large scale software systems
  • Formalisation of control mechanisms in software systems
  • Integration of software, networking and control
  • Learning and decision making in large scale software systems
  • Large scale adaptive system design and architecture
  • Control of adaptive software rejuvenation
  • Adaptive testing and test case generation
  • Control in fault-tolerant computing
  • Control in quality and security
  • AI for software cybernetics and QoS control
  • Practice and experience of SaaCS (Software-as-a-Control-System)


At least one author of each accepted paper (including panelists’ position statements) must register with the full fee and present at the workshop in order for the paper to be included in the QRS 2017 Supplemental Proceedings. Papers will also be submitted to the IEEE Xplore database and indexed by all the abstracting and indexing partners (such as the EI Compendex).

Best Paper Award

At least one award will be presented. Authors will receive a certificate signed by the President of the IEEE Reliability Society and the Organizers of IWSC 2017.

Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers as well as industrial practice papers. Simultaneous submissions to other publications and conferences are not permitted. Detailed instructions for electronic paper submission, panel proposals and review process can be found at http://paris.utdallas.edu/qrs17/.

The length of a camera ready paper will be limited to eight pages, including the title of the paper, the name and affiliation of each author, a 150-word abstract, and up to 6 keywords.

Authors must follow the IEEE conference proceedings format to prepare papers. At least one of the authors of each accepted paper is required to pay full registration fee and present the paper at the workshop. Arrangements are being made to publish selected accepted papers in reputable journals. The submissions must be in PDF and uploaded to the conference submission site.
